How do I see IT in everyday life?
WI program has taught me to see IT as a means of getting things done and not as a final goal by itself. Although technology advancements enable fast data transfer, wireless communication et cetera, its main purpose from my perspective is to enable us humans to fare better in whatever we try to do.
From this perspective, I consider myself lucky to live during this time. Technology and ways of taking advantage of it are constantly evolving, helping us individuals to live a better life and work more efficiently.
I see new technology and ways of taking advantage of it everywhere: I plan my commute using a mobile app, have video meetings with my clients over a 4G wireless network and work with colleagues who reside on different continents in real time. Go back in time 10 years and all of this was impossible or very costly to do. And the best part of this all? I am in the frontline figuring out new ways of living my life and doing work using all this new and very cool technology.
What my current work is about?
I work as a business intelligence consultant with a high interest in helping our customers lead their processes through information rather than intuition. I work in projects where there is a strong focus on analysis and potential use of the data which the different corporate IT systems produce.
I am also heavily involved in the internal development of our own organization, work and business, being the lead for technology innovation productization. This means that I get to spend my time with new tech and finding out ways to incorporate it to the daily work of our clients.
My work is heavily project oriented and work is done in teams. My team is posed with customer’s business challenge (How can we improve our sales pipeline? How can we serve our customers better and measure it?), and we then methodologically go through the necessary steps to first identify the encompassed information and processes and then sketch out a new way of working for the client to incorporate the revealed and relevant information to support the business.
What WI at Work means to me?
WI programme has given me the skills and capability to assess client challenges methodologically and with a tight focus on how to employ the IT solutions to support individuals and organisations to fulfil their purpose. Or the other way, how to work more efficiently.
Tools taught during the WI program, such as systems thinking give me the ability to discuss about the business needs with the client in a holistic way and then the more fine detailed tools, such as database and UML modelling skills enable me to further communicate the business needs to the different stakeholders involved in the process. Overall, the WI program gives a very broad skillset consisting of relevant business and IT skills to succeed in nowadays work life.
Me and my future
I’ve worked as a consultant since graduation and I think that this will be my chosen path for the future. I enjoy being a professional with the ability to work with the biggest and greatest companies in Finland. I get to know how different industries work and generate revenue and how they can be helped to achieve these even better. Also, the people I work with are very relaxed, down to earth and overall a very happy bunch and this is something I am keen to hold on.
